Here are some uncommon kitchen and storage ideas to help make this important room both appealing and useful.

Utilizing Your Space
Maximize your space by cleverly storing everyday kitchen necessities on your countertop or on your walls. You can always display food on your counter in pretty glass apothecary jars or repurpose a vintage urn to hold everyday utensils near your stove. Old library card catalog drawers work nicely to organize forks, knives, spoons, and napkins. Look for wire baskets, wooden crates or metal pie tins to add a rustic charm.

On your wall, hang bathroom towel racks for kitchen towels, or add S-hooks to hang large matching serving spoons for display on your back splash. Hanging it on your backsplash makes it easily accessible while you are cooking. A coat hanger works nicely for dish towels or aprons, too. Consider using a photo ledge or narrow shelf to display your small plates and bowls, rather than hiding them away in the cabinets.
Cupboards and Shelves
We often overlook the space that's available inside the cupboards and the shelves of our kitchens. Hanging a framed magnetic board on the inside of your cupboard doors can act as message board and house spices. You can even hang a small window shutter inside your pantry door to hang extra dish towels or utensils. On your shelves, keep the lids of pots and pans in one place by using a letter organizer and stack them sideways. Another idea is using vintage wire baskets and wooden boxes to separate and organize food items in your pantry.

Upcycled Furniture for Storage
Upcycling large pieces of furniture work perfectly in a kitchen. A book shelf doesn't have to stay in the living room. Use one in the kitchen for extra storage for serving platters and bowls. Get creative and make a coffee bar and display coffee beans in air tight glass jars, coffee cups and saucers, dried creamers and dish towels on the shelves. You can then place your coffee and espresso maker on top to make the bookshelf both aesthetically pleasing and useful. Finally, try repurposing a dresser, buffet or sideboard as the base of a kitchen island. The drawers will provide added storage and will add a unique stylish flare to your kitchen decor.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

5 Elements of Successful Container Gardening

The act of putting a seed in the ground, having it grow and produce delicious, natural edibles can also have a surprisingly low chance of success. Sun exposure, water, space and particularly soil conditions can have a big impact on whether or not a seed germinates, grows and produces.

So, unless your an experienced gardener with existing beds, take the ground out of the equation altogether and plant in containers. Whether you use terra cotta pots, raised beds or your favorite thrift store finds, container gardening gives you control over soil quality and placement, and often allows you to get more produce for the space. It's a great solution for outdoor space of any size. Here are the five elements necessary to make sure you produce the most produce.
Ceramic or plastic pots are commonly sold at garden centers and home improvement stores, but you can plant in almost anything that can stand up to being outside: food containers, old tires, metal tubs, old coolers, specialized containers and more. The trick with container planting is that the soil must have proper drainage to allow water to flow out of the soil. If you're using a recycled container, you must use a drill to create a series of holes in the bottom that will allow for drainage. The Container
The container is the vessel or the walls that hold the soil. Ceramic or plastic pots are commonly sold at garden centers and home improvement stores, but you can plant in almost anything that can stand up to being outside: food containers, old tires, metal tubs, old coolers, tiered planters and more. The trick with container planting is that the soil must have proper drainage that allows water to flow out of the soil and root system and not drown the plants. If you're using a recycled container, you must use a drill to create a series of holes in the bottom that will allow for drainage. Adding some rocks or small stones at the bottom can help.

If you own your home or have a small yard where you'll stay for a while, you can build a raised garden bed, which is a container as well. Grab two 2x10s from the hardware store in cedar, redwood or other weather-resisting species. Cut each in half and connect with 3 1/2" decking screws to create a 4x4' box. Set into place, then cover the inside area with wet newspaper as a barrier for weeds and grass.

The Soil
Soil is the real reason to opt for containers instead of the ground: you can control the makeup of the medium in which you grow your plants. Furthermore, you can prevent most weed growth, since you're not bringing in any external seeds of plants you don't intend to grow.

You can buy commercially available potting mixes, but I'd recommend creating your own from a mix of perlite, vermiculite, compost, peat moss and/or top soil. These create spongy, lightweight mixes that allow for excellent drainage and for plants to germinate easily and build root systems. Look online or ask your local garden center for recipes and ratios.

The Plants
The plants are up to you. Nearly any annual can grow in a container of appropriate size. Grow what you want to eat; what you can't find easily at local farmer's markets; and what you'll like to look at. The most important aspect is selecting seasonal plants that work well in your area in terms of sun exposure and season. You simply cannot grow tender lettuces or spinach in full sun in the middle of summer -- they'll fry. So, shop at a local garden center that has started their seeds in-house. Or, consult your county extension center or local Master Gardeners club for recommendations. They may even have some proven seedlings for sale. You can also start your own seedlings with this DIY grow light how-to from GMC Trade Secrets.

The Sun
Sunlight is a necessary source of energy that allows plants to grow. The great thing about container gardening is that you can place or move your containers to get the appropriate amount and intensity of sunlight each plant species needs. Customize the plants you choose based on what sort of exposure your space gets. Summer favorites like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers need full sun for months, but many herbs, fruits, berries and leafy greens can survive in only four to six hours of sunlight a day. Check the seed packet or planter tag for your plants needs, then customize your container's arrangement to suit the sunlight needs of what's growing inside.

The Water and Nutrients
With proper drainage and the right soil mix, it's hard to overwater your plants. Overwatering is undesirable, as it rots plant roots. This is important to note in rainy areas during the spring and fall. Most container gardens only need to be watered once a day, preferably in the morning or late evening, when the hot sun will not heat up the water on the leaves and damage them. Remember: water the soil, not the plants. Plants receive water via their root system, not their leaves. The leaves absorb sunlight.

Nutrients and other soil amendments can easily be added to containers, where amounts are small and the soil is easy to work. Usually you can simply add a cup or two of blended compost with each new round of plants or seeds. Consider creating your own super rich compost by building a DIY worm bin, or using another natural fertilizer.
Instructions:
1. Choose your canisters. You can look for a new set that you like or update an old bunch. For the purposes of this tutorial, we used an old set to upcycle.

2. If there is an existing design on your canister, use a lightweight sandpaper to gently remove it. Wash and clean your canister with soap and water. Dry it with a clean cloth.

3. Place your canisters upside down on a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area, and paint them with spray paint in the color of your choice. Allow them to dry in between coats. We applied two coats.

4. Once your newly painted canisters are completely dry, wipe them with rubbing alcohol and allow them to dry for approximately 15 minutes. Next, position the adhesive stencil on top. It helps to place a dish towel under the canister to protect it from the hard surface of your workspace.

5. Using a Spouncer sponge brush, apply the chalkboard paint in an up-and-down motion. Two coats will work best.

6. Carefully remove the stencil. Bubbles may surface, however, they will disappear as the chalkboard paint dries.

7. Once the chalkboard paint dries, use chalk to label your canisters. Waiting a full 24 hours is ideal.

Chalkboard paint can be used on several types of surfaces including glass, ceramic, wood, tin, plastic and even fabric. It comes in a variety of colors, as well. Consider updating home decor accents such as trays, mirrors or frames, or use it for outdoor projects like creating labels for garden herbs or vegetables. The possibilities of decorating with chalkboard paint are endless!
Reclaimed wood refers to lumber that has served a previous function and hasn't come directly from the sawmill. It's often free or available at a fraction of the cost of new lumber, saving you cash you can invest in other projects. Additionally, reclaimed wood has a visual appeal that fresh kiln-dried wood can't match.

Specifically, salvaged wood has wear and tear to the surface and grain, and is more beautiful because of its age. Weathering, worm or bug holes, and spalted figures give the stock loads of character, which will translate into your home improvement or creative project.

Older wood is also available in larger dimensions, and was most likely cut from old-growth, local trees in sizes you can't get at the lumber yard. Of course, reclaimed wood is recycled wood, so no extra trees need to be cut to use it. In sum, you're saving on manufacturing and shipping costs, with results that are better for the earth and better for your project.

How to Find Reclaimed Wood:

Wooden barns are a prized site for long, thick wood stock. Make friends with your local barn salvagers who can give you a call when they get a head's up about "new" old barn wood. Check local classifieds or Craigslist for sources as well.

An unbelievable amount of landfills in the United States are filled with construction and demolition debris. This means useable lumber can be found in many dumpsters, particularly those that are situated outside of homes that are being remodeled. Just be sure to ask the homeowners or the contractors, and be extra careful when sorting.

Building co-ops and rehab facilities are often full of old hardwood flooring, solid wood doors and old wooden cabinets.

Secondhand furniture shops, garage sales and thrift stores are good sites to look for solid table tops; headboards and footboards; credenzas; and side boards. Also, local church garage sales can also have old church pews, which are a goldmine for heavy, thick slabs of wood.

Safety When Working With Reclaimed Wood
Even more important than with general DIY work, it is essential to use proper safety equipment and take the appropriate precautions when salvaging and preparing reclaimed lumber. Not only will there be rusty nails and hardware, but the lumber can host lots of dirt, mold, bacteria and even bugs. Thick gloves and protective clothing; a respirator or dust mask; and proper eye protection are essential. Take extra care when sorting through materials, and particularly in construction dumpsters.

How to Prep and Prepare Reclaimed Lumber:

1. Begin by removing all nails, screws, hinges, handles and other hardware. A magnet will help, but a small metal detector is recommended. You can purchase them at woodworking shops for $20-$30, and they will save you loads of time.

2. A hammer and small pry-bar or "cat's paw" are the best tools for removing nails. If you have any stubborn hardware you just can't get out, you can drill out the hardware with small diameter bits to create a space to remove the hardware. Other helpful tools: a screwdriver, a nail punch and strong pliers.

3. Wood that has been outside or stored in a outdoor building such as a garage will likely be covered in dirt and dust that will clog up sandpaper and dull your saw blades. Remove it with a brass bristle brush (from the paint aisle), and vacuum it up frequently with a shop vacuum.

4. Once clean, use a rough 60- or 80-grit sandpaper to clean any more dirt, stain or finish, as well as saw blade marks from older milling tools.

5. Square up any cracked, split or ragged ends with a circular or miter saw. Then you can start to plan your project. A jointer and/or planer will do wonders for bringing your wood back to life, but a circular or table saw can easily turn salvaged lumber into usable stock.
Invitations
If you're planning a party, send your invite as a message in a bottle. Fill a small glass vessel with sand and tiny shells before rolling up the invitation details on a small piece of paper to fit inside. Top with a cork and then hand-deliver them to close friends, or mail them in a pretty blue box with a bow.
Perfect Place Settings
For your place settings, incorporate a beach color palette of blues, greens, tans and white by layering dinner plates, salad plates and bowls. Incorporate natural fibers in your placemats, and tie your utensils together with rope or twine. If you have time, try this DIY rope napkin ring project. Don't be afraid to mix and match. Get creative by laying netting over your table cloth and fill clear vases with sand, shells and a starfish for a calming ocean-inspired centerpiece. Adding a pop of color like red coral can also make a bold statement, as well.

Party Favors
After dinner, send your guests on their way with a little party favor. Wrap chocolate shells in small plastic bags and tie them with twine and a thank-you message. You can also place a single cupcake in a box decorated with ocean blue icing, finely crushed graham crackers and a chocolate shell on top.

Planning your next summer dinner party with a beach theme in mind can be sophisticated and encourage relaxation and conversation among your guests. Creating a calming and elegant event like this will certainly be a party to remember.
But, as any DIYer, homeowner or apartment dweller knows, hammers are good for only two or three specific tasks, and are of little help with working with shaping, cutting, repair, assembly or cleaning.

If you're interested in beginning to build a useable tool kit for taking on your own home improvement or creative DIY projects, you'll find the most versatile toolboxes include a mix of hand tools -- like the hammer -- and power tools. Here are five essential power tools to get you started.
Putting thought and time into handmade gift wrapping will make your gift stand out at your next birthday party or baby shower. Here are some fun and creative gift wrapping ideas to help celebrate your next special occasion.

Wrap with a Theme in Mind
There is a lot of time and effort put in when planning a theme party. Show your host your appreciation by wrapping your gift to fit the party theme. Instead of a standard gift box or bag, look for alternative containers to use. For example use Chinese take-out boxes for an Asian theme or fabric covered storage boxes for a baby shower that can be used in the baby's room after the party.

Make Your Own Embellishments
Make your gift stand out by making your own embellishments. Handmade flowers and ribbon add a whimsical look to a pretty package. Here are three unique ideas. First, you can make paper flowers by dying coffee filters with food coloring and bunching four together to form your flower. Trim your flower to size with scissors. Next, you can dye newspaper or book pages with water colors. Once dried, cut your dyed paper into flower petal shapes. Pinch each petal together one by one to form a rose shape. Secure the end with glue. Finally, make flowers out of plastic water bottles. Cut the bottle in half, using the half with the mouth piece as your flower. Cut out petals with scissors and bend them to create the flower. Paint the flower with acrylic craft paint or nail polish. Cut fringe out of scrapbook paper to put in the center of your flower.

Get Creative with Unusual Sized Gifts
Sometimes a great gift comes in an unusual size or shape. Decorate your gift with a large ribbon bow. Make tissue paper pom poms to tie to the ends of your ribbon. To make the pom poms, layer 6-8 sheets of tissue paper and fold them like an accordion. Secure the center with string and gently pull back each layer on both sides forming a pom pom. You can also decorate your unwrapped gift by using pretty paper. Weave strips of paper to create a pattern and use craft punches to decorate your unique gift.

A gift bag with "happy birthday" written all over it and tissue paper hanging out of the top is nice, however, it will blend in with the rest of the presents on the gift table. Get creative by using one of these ideas to make your gift stand out and show appreciation to the guest of honor.

With the Memorial Day coming up, many are getting ready for the return of swimming-pool season, fresh summer produce, and, most importantly, grilling. If you haven't touched yours since last fall, it's likely covered in last season's residue and grime from sitting outside or in your garage all winter. So, before donning your apron and grabbing the tongs, take a quick 15 minutes to clean and maintain your grill and you'll be ready for the summer.

Cleaning a Gas Grill
1. With the grill completely cool and all valves shut, disconnect the fuel line and remove the grates, racks and flavor bars (or lava rocks) to expose the burners.

2. Using a stiff wire brush, clean the burners and the inside of the grill box and lid. You can use a grill grate brush for this, but a smaller brush from the hardware store will provide better maneuverability and allow you to get into corners.

3. If you grill has a bottom tray for drippings and debris (or smoking), sweep as much as you can into the tray and discard. Remove the tray recess to get the grit out of the grill. If necessary, you can use a shop vacuum to remove any extra debris.

4. Scrub the flavor bars and grill grates with a steel brush to remove any burnt food, ash or rust. If your grates are stainless steel, you can use soapy water if necessary, but a stiff brush will be very effective. If your grates are cast iron, avoid any soap or cleansers.

5. Lastly, clean the outside of your grill. If your grill is painted porcelain, use a glass or all-purpose cleaner and soft rag. If it's stainless steel, use a microfiber cloth and stainless-steel cleaner. Clean the front panel and side trays with dish soap if they're made out of plastic, or use stainless cleaner if they're made of steel.

6. Before your next grilling session, turn all burners to high with the lid closed for 15 minutes. This will burn off any residue, which you can then scrape of with your grill brush.
Cleaning a Charcoal Grill
1. With the grill cool, remove the grilling grate and charcoal grate. Then clear the bowl, lid and tray of all ash and debris.

2. Wipe the inside of the lid and bowl with a damp rag or paper towel to remove ash, then use a mild dish-soap-and-water solution and fine steel wool or dish scrub pad to clean any residue.

3. Use a wire brush to clean the bottom charcoal grate and grill grate. Reassemble the grill, then use the same soap and water/steel wool combo from Step 2 to clean the outside of the bowl, lid, tray and grill legs.

4. The next time you cook, heat the grill to high by opening the bottom and lid vent for 15 minutes. Once hot, use a heat-proof glove and grill brush to remove any debris on the cooking grate. Then oil the grates with a wad of paper towels soaked in cooking oil, held with a pair of tongs.

5. Finally, get grilling!
Often acting as the focal point of a bedroom, a unique headboard can give dimension to one of the most important spaces in your house. Size, shape and color play important roles when choosing a headboard that is right for you. For example, a large room should have high and wide headboard, while a small room should have a low headboard to create the illusion of a larger space. Here are some creative considerations for you to keep in mind when making your selection.
Function Meets Style
Style does not need to replace function. If space is an issue, consider using built-in shelves to surround your bed. This is a great option for both large and small spaces. A headboard framed with cubes in a striking grid like pattern will not only create interest, but will also add storage and display spaces for framed family photos or artwork.

Repurpose to Add Interest
Think outside of the box and use items to upcycle for your headboard. Metal gates, shutters or old doors create a stylish rustic and whimsical feel. Architectural salvage stores are a great place to find unique headboards like this. You can also find colorful vintage signs or one-of-a-kind artwork to use in place of a headboard for an attention-grabbing statement piece, or try vintage fabrics draped from the ceiling to create a dramatic and feminine effect.

Make Your Own Headboard
Making your own headboard may be simpler than you think. For an easy do-it-yourself project, try creating a large canvas piece to be used as your headboard. Cover the canvas with the fabric of your choice. Upholstery fabric is sturdy and comes in many colors and patterns to fit any style. Lay the fabric face-down, and then place the canvas (also face-down) on top. Allow approximately 2-3 inches of extra fabric on each side. Fold each edge of the fabric over. Using a staple gun, hold the fabric taut as you staple all four sides.

Whether you choose a traditional upholstered headboard, hang rustic barn doors, or make your own, the creative design choices you make will have a big impact on the overall style of the room. Create that 'wow' factor to transform the look and feel of your bedroom by picking a distinctive piece that suits your style.
Installing a garage door opener is an easy DIY project, provided you take proper precautions and have at least two people on the job. Hiring a professional will usually cost more than the price of the opener itself, and most openers can be installed or replaced in an afternoon.

This project involves some light electrical and mechanical work, so it passes our 'Drawing the DIY Line' test. However, if you've never had an electric door opener in your garage, you may need to have outlets installed or wires run to the door panel or remote. In those cases, you'll want to consult a licensed electrician.
Of course, you'll want to follow the installation guide and manual provided by the manufacturer for any specifics, but here's the basic outline plus some pro tips for a simple installation.

Tools and Materials

New garage door opener and pulley system

Ladder or stepladder

Masking or painter's tape and marker

Electric drill/driver

Level

Hack saw

Socket wrench set (standard)

Wire cutter/stripper

Adjustable wrench

Hammer

Screwdriver

Step 1: Planning and Research
Identify the type and size of your garage door, and assess that it is in good working order. Manually open it and check for smooth sliding and for balance. Does the door stay parallel as it opens and closes? Will it stay open by the tension of the springs if you leave it halfway closed? Does the door rack or bind? If everything is in operating condition, then research the best new opener for your needs at a local store and online. If the door itself needs work, consult a technician.

Step 2: Remove the Old Opener
Use a step ladder to unplug the old opener from the ceiling, then turn off the power at the breaker. Note where the current wires are attached, and make labels to identify them for later. With the unit unplugged and the circuit off, begin disassembling the existing opener. Remove any ropes and locks. Detach and secure any wires, then remove the unit from the mounting bracket. If the old opener was securely attached, you can likely reuse the existing angle iron and mounting bracket for your new opener, saving lots of time and effort. With the door down, detach the door from the track, then remove the old opener, track and pulley system entirely.

Step 3: Assemble the Rail
Unpack the new opener and all hardware, then assemble the new rail and attach to the motor unit with the included hardware. Be careful not to tighten too much.

Step 4: Install the Pulley
With the motor and rail on the ground, lay the belt besides the rail, and attach the trolley and secure. Place the pulley inside the window at the end of the rail, and tighten with included lock washer and nut until the washer is secured. Check to make sure the pulley spins freely.

Step 5: Install the Belt and Trolley
Pull the belt around the pulley and hook either end to the trolley. Connect using the included hardware, following the manufacturer's directions. Make sure each connection, pin, and nut is secure, but only finger tight.

Step 6: Set the Belt Tension
This is the only potentially dangerous part of the install, so watch your fingers, proceed with caution. Always follow the manual. Place a screwdriver in between the tensioning nut and the trolley, then slowly rotate the nut 1/8 to 1/4 turn until the spring releases and snaps against the trolley. Remove the screwdriver.

Step 7: Install the Header Bracket
Close the door, and note the center of the door's width. Allowing for proper clearance, install the header bracket into the front wall of your garage with the include lag screws and adjustable and socket wrenches. Attach the rail to the header bracket and secure. With a friend's help, use a ladder to position the opener. Hopefully, you'll be able to reuse the existing bracket. If not, follow the manufacturer's instructions to create a new hanging bracket from angle iron or from the included mounting hardware.

Step 8: Hang the Opener
With the rail attached to the header bracket, walk the opener up the ladder and secure into the support bracket. Secure with the appropriate hardware, but do not plug the unit back in.

Step 9: Last Steps
Install the door control, remotes, new photoelectric eyes and the lights. Attach the release rope, fasten the door to the opener with the included bracket, and connect the door arm to the trolley. Lastly, with all wires secured, turn on the circuit and plug the unit in. Adjust the up and down travel limits to guarantee the door closes all the way and does not travel in the opposite direction once it meets its limit.
Bedroom or Nursery
Hung in the middle of the ceiling or over your bed, a chandelier in the bedroom can bring a nice design element to your décor. Make sure you choose materials that complement your bedroom design theme. Crystals and glass are glamorous, while beads and wood are less flashy. Consider the ambiance and functionality, as well. In a bedroom, smaller light bulbs or small shades will diffuse the light. Think about adding a dimmer switch to adjust the brightness in the room, too.

Bathroom
Bathroom chandeliers are quite unexpected. The size and shape of the chandelier in the bathroom is important to consider. Mini chandelier pendants with three or four lights work well in a small bathroom, and come in several styles, colors and finishes to suit your bathroom décor. When hanging a chandelier in a bathroom, consider the distance from the bathtub for safety reasons. For example, hang the pendent in the center of the room or in a dressing area versus directly over the bathtub. Be sure to check with an electrician to ensure your project is up to code.

Kitchen
Generally speaking, we spend more time in the kitchen than any other room in the house. Why not make it a room worth celebrating? One large piece with un-shaded bulbs will not only add a light source that may be needed in the kitchen, but will also add a unique focal point. Chandeliers are a great way to include a piece of stylish art in your kitchen.

Once reserved for formal spaces, chandeliers now have the license to grace any space. There are many options and styles available -- you just need to find the right one to add sophistication and elegance to the room of your choice.
Some people simply prefer to leave home improvement tasks to the pros. They know their interests, their skill sets, their time limitations, and will happily pay someone to paint their walls or mow their lawn in addition to major projects such as remodels or additions. Others have DIY eyes that are often too big for their DIY stomachs, as it were. They'll get excited, start the demolition immediately, and are soon left with holes in their walls, floors and non-functioning rooms for months, even years.

So, when does it make sense to draw the line on which projects can be tackled by the average homeowner and which are best left to the pros? There are three major factors:

Material Safety
Any project involving hazardous materials or gas appliances should be left to the pros. In fact, in some regions like the U.K., you must be licensed to do any sort of gasline work. Some light electricity work is safe for the weekend warrior -- such as updating a light fixture or installing a ceiling fan in an existing box -- but anything beyond a simple hookup should be performed by an professional electrician, who can guarantee the work will be done to code. This will also help maintain the value of your home.

Personal Safety
Any project that puts the worker in a dangerous position should be handled by someone with experience and the proper safety equipment. This includes many roofing jobs and exterior painting. If you're ever hesitant to use a power tool, ask for help. If you don't feel confident, you won't be able to use it properly and safely.

Structural Changes
The integrity of your home depends on maintaining a strong foundation. Any time your addressing load-bearing walls, your attic, or the skeleton of your home, bring in a professional. They'll be able to perform the right calculations for loads and use the proper, specialized equipment.

Painting or updating cabinetry, and changing door and drawer pulls.

Installing new lighting fixtures or ceiling fans in existing electrical boxes.

Tiling a kitchen or bathroom.

Installing or refinishing hardwood floors.

Staining, painting, or refinishing furniture.

Replacing or reupholstering simple pillows or cushions.

Call the Pros:

Working with gas lines

Attic insulation and weatherproofing

Replacing windows

HVAC duct installation

Major plumbing or sewage tasks, such as extending or re-routing water lines

Gutter or roof repair

Tree removal

Upgrading your water heater or boiler

Foundation repairs

Room additions

With any of these DIY tasks, you'll want to be certain you calculate your most valuable asset -- your own time and energy. You can complete a project over a weekend, but it might take a professional team just a few hours to accomplish the same task. Keep these tips in mind the next time you're up for some home improvement.

Step One
Choose a glass piece to personalize. You want your surface to be clean, so wash it with soap and water and dry thoroughly.

Step Two
Apply your stencil. We used Martha Stewart's adhesive craft stencils, which is a peel and stick method. If you want to make your own design, you can make your own stencil by drawing a unique design on adhesive vinyl or contact paper. Use a sharp knife, such as an Exacto knife, holding it at a 90-degree angle to cut out your design on a cutting mat. When applying the adhesive stencil, make sure there are no bubbles. If you are using a non-adhesive stencil, make sure it is securely held in place with tape.

Step Three
Apply the etching cream with a paint brush. Use a generous amount to apply a thick layer. Leave the cream on for approximately 5-10 minutes or follow the directions provided on the bottle.

Step Four
Rinse off the cream with water, removing all of it from your stencil. You may need to gently rub it off with your finger.

Step Five
Dry off your glass with a clean cloth and apply the next stencil. Tip: If you are using a thick or heavy glass, you may have to repeat steps three through five up to three times. Make sure to leave the stencil on in between coats.

Once you have your finished product, make sure you care for it properly. Etching cream will permanently etch designs on glass or mirrors, and you can safely wash and clean your glass after it's etched. It is highly recommended not to use etching cream near kids or animals.

In these five steps, you can create several unique pieces, such as a small vase for your tabletop or a large mirror in your entryway. Consider personalizing a set of monogrammed glassware for your next dinner party, or stamping your family name on your casserole dishes. The possibilities are endless.
Planting a vegetable garden is an immensely rewarding activity, and starting your own plants from seed makes it that much better. With seed starting, you can control what goes into your soil, while commercial seedlings can bring diseases and other harmful substances into you garden. Growing from seed also gives you access to a much greater and tastier variety of vegetables -- older, heirloom varieties, as well as unique and interesting produce that is known to work especially well in your zone and specific climate.

For most of us, frost, snow and cold temperatures prevent us from starting seeds outside in time for lots of spring and summer veggies. So, build your own easy and affordable seed starting rig and begin your seedlings inside. Then, transplant them in your garden to grow and produce all those tasty fruits and veggies.
Tools and Materials

Containers for growing your seedlings (see Step 1)

Two 4' T8 fluorescent shop light fixtures from the hardware store

Four T8 fluorescent tubes bulbs - full spectrum or two warm and two cool (see step 4)

Chain and hardware (screw hooks)

Light timer

Potting mix

Seeds

Plant labels (you can make your own from craft sticks or recycled plastic)

1. Begin by selecting your containers to grow your seeds. You can use egg cartons, DIY seed starting cups made from newspaper, which will decompose into the soil, or buy specialty trays from the garden center. Here, we're using seed starting trays that we given to me from a local farm. Whatever you use, just make sure the cells or cups have proper drainage -- poke holes in the bottom with a nail, awl, or small drill bit.

2. Fill your containers with soil, and shake or press down lightly to flatten. Then, follow the directions on your seed packet to determine the right planting depth; create a small divot and place two to three seeds in each; and cover with soil.

3. Mark your seeds so you can remember what you've planted! Here, we're using some old clothespins, but you could make yours from anything that can get a little wet, like popsicle sticks, plastic knives, or balsa wood.

4. In order to mimic the sun, your grow lights need to have a full spectrum of light, that is, all the color temperatures that the sun produces naturally, from about 2000 to 7000 Kelvin. You can buy specialty grow bulbs, but your hardware store or home center likely sells full spectrum bulbs with the regular fluorescent tubes. If you can't find them, buy one two-pack each of warm (red) and cool (blue) 40-watt tubes, and place one of each in each shop light.

5. Hang your light fixtures from some sturdy surface. If you have a basement, hang them from the floor joists. You could also hang them inside a book shelf, under a table, or you could build an inexpensive rig from PVC or galvanized pipe fittings, which can be disassembled for storage. You want to hang the lights around 2-3 inches from the soil at first, and then move them up the chain (or re-tie the rope) to keep the same distance as the plants grow.

6. You should try to give your grow lights a natural day, which means 16 hours of light, and eight hours of darkness. Using a lighting timer guarantees that the lights will be on and off as necessary. To care for your plants, water them regularly but sparingly. Use a spray bottle and give them a little mist in the morning. Make sure the soil is damp but still fluffy and light. Overwatering compacts the soil, making it very difficult for the young roots to push through. If your lighting setup doesn't light each cell evenly, regular rotation and moving of the seed trays will help give even light.

7. You can keep your seedlings under your grow lights for as long as necessary, until you transplant them in the garden bed, letting the real sun work it's magic. Happy gardening.

With its rich flavor and creamy texture, it's hard not to love risotto. The classic Italian dish is the ultimate comfort food and a staple on Italian restaurant menus, but home cooks are often intimidated to make it. With the right technique and a few tips, you'll be able to make the perfect restaurant-quality risotto at home and impress your guests at your next dinner party.

Risotto is classically made with Italian short grain rice. Arborio rice is the most common variety and can usually be found in regular grocery stores. Other types include Vialone Nano and Carnaroli, which can be found in specialty stores. A perfectly cooked risotto should have a creamy, almost porridge-like consistency, yet each grain of rice should retain a distinct bite. In order to achieve this texture, the rice is lightly toasted in a pan first and then the cooking liquid is added in stages while the rice is stirred almost constantly. This process slowly releases the starch in the rice and produces the desired creamy consistency.

Once you have the technique down you can adapt the same method for other types of grains. If you're trying to incorporate more whole grains in your diet, you can use barley, farro, brown rice or wheat berries. You can also use small pasta shapes like orzo.

Here are a few tips for making the perfect risotto:

Blanch your vegetables by briefly submerging them in boiling water and then shocking them in cold water to preserve their color and texture.

Heat your stock. Keep the cooking liquid warm in a saucepan to help quicken the cooking process. If using store-bought stock, you can add vegetable trimmings and herbs to infuse it with more flavor.

Use a wide, heavy-gauge sauté pan or saucepan for even heat distribution (I used my Le Creuset braiser).

Sauté your aromatics (like leeks, onion, shallots, and garlic) in a little olive oil or butter to develop flavor.

Add the rice and stir to coat each grain with the fat. Lightly toast the rice for 1-2 minutes before you start adding the liquid. This helps the rice retain the proper texture as it cooks and prevents it from becoming mushy.

Add wine and let it reduce. Wine will add flavor to the dish but you must let it reduce to avoid any raw wine flavor.

Add the stock in stages, a few ladles at a time, stirring constantly as you go. Each time the liquid is almost fully absorbed, add more. The best results supposedly come from using a wooden spoon as it's less likely than a metal spoon to break the grains of rice.

Stir in the vegetables, herbs and Parmesan cheese at the end. Classically, a little butter is also added at the end for richness but I wanted to cut down on some calories and saturated fat so I left it out. The finished dish will still have a rich flavor and texture.

Serve the risotto immediately while it's still warm and creamy. The longer it sits, the more it will stiffen.

Now that you've got the technique down, why not try my Lemon Risotto with Spring Vegetables? This dish highlights lovely, vibrant spring vegetables -- leeks, asparagus and peas. Fresh lemon adds a nice acidity and brightness to the dish, and cuts through the richness of the risotto. It's delicious alone or served with sautéed shrimp or scallops. I made the dish with traditional Arborio rice but if you want to use some whole grains, try making it with barley or farro and adjust for a longer cooking time.

Lemon Risotto with Spring Vegetables
Makes 6 servings

12 ounces asparagus
1 cup fresh or frozen spring peas
1 quart low sodium chicken or vegetable stock
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium leek, sliced and rinsed
2 cloves garlic, minced
Salt and pepper
1 1/2 cups Arborio rice
1 cup dry white wine
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons lemon zest
2 tablespoons fresh, chopped parsley
1.25 ounces grated Parmesan cheese (about 1/3 cup)

Trim the ends from the asparagus. Cut the remaining stalks into 1-inch pieces. Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil and add the asparagus. Cook until crisp tender, 3-4 minutes. If using fresh peas, add the peas along with the asparagus. If using frozen peas, add them during the last minute. Transfer the vegetables to a bowl of ice water. Drain the vegetables and set aside.

Heat the stock along with 2 cups water in a large saucepan. Add the trimmings from the asparagus and leek and the parsley stems to add flavor to the stock. Bring to a simmer and then keep warm on low heat while you make the risotto.

Heat the oil in a large, wide sauté pan. Add the leeks and garlic and season them with salt and pepper. Cook until leeks are partially softened, 4-5 minutes. Add the rice and stir to coat all of the grains with the oil. Cook 1-2 minutes to lightly toast the rice and then add the wine. Cook a few minutes until the wine is reduced, stirring occasionally.

Add the warm stock, a few ladles at a time, stirring the rice frequently. Each time the liquid is almost completely absorbed, add some more stock. Continue adding the liquid in this manner, stirring often, to develop the starch in the rice. It should take about 20 minutes for the rice to cook once you start adding the liquid.

When the rice is done, it will be plump and al dente -- tender but still firm to the bite. At this point, lower the heat and stir in the lemon juice and zest, asparagus, peas, parsley, Parmesan cheese, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Stir to combine all ingredients well. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Garnish with parsley and lemon zest. Serve immediately.
Decorating with white sandy beaches in mind can add calm and relaxation to any room. Arrange a collection of seashells or sand from your travels in a jar or vase and use it as a centerpiece. Label the jar with your vacation destination and date on a tag with twine to add a personal touch. Meanwhile, shells and large coral pieces make beautiful centerpieces. Display them on tabletops, inside sand-filled glass bowls or vases, or place larger pieces atop pillar candle holders. You can also place them in wooden containers in a bathroom, guest room, or living room. And don't forget about beach-inspired colors. Blue represents the ocean and water, while green represents life. Try grouping blue and green bottles together on a console or bookshelf to offer a nod to nature.
All-Natural
Natural fibers like sisal, burlap, jute and rope can add an lovely layer of texture to your room. These materials are eco-friendly, chic and timeless. Textiles like these go with several types of decor motifs, including industrial, rustic, nautical and French country. For an easy DIY project, wrap hurricane glasses halfway in rope using hot glue. Then insert white pillar candles for a beautiful display. You can also use small pieces of wood as bases for candles or vases. Natural wood is another great material for a DIY project. Check lumber yards or architectural salvage places for statement pieces to add to your room decor. You can even make your own coffee and side tables by simply adding glass atop of a wood stump.

Woodland Chic
Bring a woodland feel into your home by installing screened windows, wood wainscoting and hardwood floors. Neutral colors -- like tan, beige and creams -- help build a warm, comforting atmosphere, while darker tones offer a rustic vibe. Bring in large statement pieces, like rocking chairs or vintage armoires, and consider refurbishing an old cupboard in green hues to complete the look. For more woodsy accents, frame dried leaves or flowers and mount in a beautiful collage. Use inexpensive rope for curtain or canopy tie backs, or use it to embellish handmade plaid throw pillows. You can also display stones, moss, or pine cones in glass bowls or apothecary jars to maximize the nature-inspired influence.

Whether your style reflects the calm ocean breeze of the beach or a woodland retreat of the great outdoors, bringing nature inside is simple. Just be selective on how you weave natural elements into your decor, and you can easily breath new life into your home.
This can contains an oil-based painting primer, pigmented pure white, but it doesn't look that way. If you have a similar can of primer, think twice before throwing it out. Even though the contents look aged, it was sealed well, and with a little stirring, it will be perfectly useable for years to come.

In the case of many of your home products, project supplies and cleaning agents, looks can be deceiving, and you'll want to check the date, rather than the appearance of the product, to make sure you know how long a product truly lasts. Here are a few essential timelines and shelf lives to commit to memory or bookmark next time you open that can or bottle.
Cans of latex paint that have never been opened will last from five to seven years, provided they haven't been frozen.<br />

Oil-based paints and primers last much longer. If you can mix them to a uniform color and consistency, they can be used as long as 10-15 years after the purchase date. I like to use oil-based primer when painting MDF to prevent it from swelling. I've opened and reused the same can a few times a year for the last five, and after a stir, it works perfectly.<br />

These are likely the products with the shortest shelf life -- not because they expire, but simply because they're designed to spread and dry as they come in contact with air. With glues, contact cements, spackle, wood fillers and the like, you simply need to test them. If they'll spread evenly without lumps or chunks, they will work securely on your project. If not (you often won't even be able to clean the applicator or bottle cap), then it's time to replace. I use these products regularly, but only buy the smallest tubes and bottles of specialty contact adhesives, wood fillers and wallboard compound for this very reason.
Proper Storage and Care
In order for any household product to last as long as possible, you need to know how long it was stored and how to store it. Water- and acrylic-based products, such as many cleansers and latex paint, should never be allowed to freeze, so your basement or utility room might be a better spot than the garage. Oil-based products won't freeze under weather conditions, and are best stored outside.

As with many things, the real enemy of long-term storage is air. So, keep your supplies in their original containers, and thoroughly clean the lids before storing to make the contents as air-tight as possible. If you plan to use the product over time (like a wood stain or an adhesive) instead of for a specific project (like painting a room), use a permanent marker to record the date purchased. Lastly, for complete storage info, simply check all that tiny print on the back label of the bottle or can and note what the manufacturer recommends.

Painting Supplies
These days, most home center and paint store products come in two varieties: latex and oil-based. Latex paints and primers are water-soluble and can last from three to five years, depending on how full the can is. Cans of latex paint that have never been opened will last from five to seven years, provided they haven't been frozen.
Oil-based paints and primers last much longer. If you can mix them to a uniform color and consistency, they can be used as long as 10-15 years after the purchase date. I like to use oil-based primer when painting MDF to prevent it from swelling. I've opened and reused the same can pictured above a few times a year for the last five, and after a stir, it works perfectly.

With any old paint, it's wise to test on a hidden area or scrap material to make sure it covers well and dries properly.
All-Purpose Spray Cleaners
All-purpose spray cleaners last at least two years in their original bottle. Check your bottles for specific expiration dates and shelf lives, or consider purchasing concentrates and mixing with water in your own spray bottle for longer lasting cleaning power.

Liquid Dish Soap
Dish soap will last from 18 months to two years. If you're looking for longer lasting soaps, consider unscented products, as it's the aroma additives that often break down the solutions.

Dishwasher Detergents
Dishwasher detergents have the shortest life span of cleaners, lasting from six months to one year for liquids, and only a few months for powders or pre-packaged tabs. Contact with moisture will make them sticky, and the membranes won't dissolve. Of course, they shouldn't harm your dishes or pots and pans, but their efficacy will be significantly limited.

Liquid Laundry Detergents
Liquid detergents maintain their maximum cleaning power up to one year after purchasing. Be sure to cap them securely, and don't let any addition water get mixed inside. Remove any dried soap or residue from the mouth to prevent build-up and a less-than-stellar seal.

Powdered Laundry Detergents
Powdered detergents and stain-fighting additives will last for quite a long time as long as their kept dry.

Wood Stains and Finishes
With the exception of shellac, wood finishing products have a fairly long shelf life. Most can be stored for a minimum of three years, though many will last for several years after. The goal here is to stir thoroughly to redistribute any pigments, then test on a scrap piece. Also, be sure to test for any rust or other solid that may be in the stain, as they'll affect the finish and any additional coats. It's definitely not worth messing up a DIY or home improvement project you've invested hours or days into for a $10-15 can of stain.

Adhesives, Spackling Compounds and Fillers
These are likely the products with the shortest shelf life -- not because they expire, but simply because they're designed to spread and dry as they come in contact with air. With glues, contact cements, spackle, wood fillers and the like, you simply need to test them. If they'll spread evenly without lumps or chunks, they will work securely on your project. If not (you often won't even be able to clean the applicator or bottle cap), then it's time to replace. I use these products regularly, but buy the smallest tubes and bottles of specialty contact adhesives, wood fillers and wallboard compound for this very reason. Unless you're a professional, the larger sizes are not worth the money.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
