Window Security

Category: Home ImprovementSafety First

Window locks are a simple way to keep your home safe and secure.

Step 1: Get Unhinged
Window locks are a simple way to keep your home safe and secure. Sash locks are great because they’re difficult to unlock from the outside. If you add a hinge lock, it will prevent the window from sliding all the way up.

Step 2: In the Hole
A pin lock is made by making a hole in the frame, then inserting a pin in the hole to lock it.

Step 3: Lock It Up
Don’t use a key lock—you’ll get stuck without the key in an emergency.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • sash lock
  • hinge lock or pink lock

Has this guy ever heard of windows that open by sliding sideways? Would like to see locks for those. Meanwhile, will rely on the pit bull.

Your windows and doors are only as strong as the framing around them where the "locks" go. I had a home invasion in which the windows were open about 2 inches and a pin was inserted to stop it from opening further. The intruder got his hands in the 2 in opening and ripped the whole window out of the frame. Same for steel doors and wood frames. I've seen steel doors come down in one kick, with framing attached.

Cheap window security and deters a thief. All windows have space in the window frame below the glass. Simply drill a hole on the inside of the window that is below the glass but into the wood or metal of the window. Drill at about a 30 degree angle. Drill through the widow and into the frame on the other side. I nearly forgot. The hole should permit an 8 penny nail to slip into it. When you leave for a trip or vacation or what ever, simply slip an 8 penny nail into the hole and into the window frame. You have to be a strong person to get the window to come up. You can use a long screw as well if it fits in the hole at the angle into the window frame. Eric, gif it a try.

These window locks don't look like a "pane." Excuse the pun. Eric Stromer is the ultimate spokesperson!!
