Step 1: Safety Zone
Nothing is more important than your family's safety. Here are some ideas that will make your pool area safe for everyone in your home. First, never allow kids to swim without adults around, and keep children under 5 within reach.

Step 2: Fenced In
Enclose the pool with a locking fence that’s at least 5 feet high, and keep it clear from any chairs or surfaces that children can use to climb over it.

Step 3: Ring On it
Keep a lifesaving ring near the pool.

Step 4: Take My Number
Keep a phone by the pool.

Step 5: Call Security
Install security devices, like infrared motion detectors or wave sensors.

Step 6: Open Sesame
Keep the pool completely covered when not in use, but never only partially open it.

Step 7: Save Lives
Learn CPR so you’re always ready for any emergency.

I have never seen the need for a home swimmng pool, that balnced the excesses of consumption, wasted energy and the obvious multitude of dangers to people of all ages.

Research the statistics if you doubt this. I refuse to quote them. Your own research will convince you more than mine. Then imagine a world without home swimming pools and see the enormous benefits.

Eric, There is a program called Infant swimming resource that teaches survival swimming. You forgot to mention how important it is to equip your child ... they can take theie skills with them wherever they go. Parental supervision will always break down and you have been so good at letting people know how important all of theses layers of protection are. This program is also a major layer of support. Thank You, Lori Tucker

When I was a youngster, we used to swim all the time without adult supervision, in the snow, uphill both ways, and we LIKED it!

WARNING: The gap in the fence is more than enough for a child to squeeze through.
