How to Remove Pet Stains

Featured pro:
Category: Home ImprovementStains Be Gone

Pet accidents are inevitable, but they they can be a cinch to clean up, if you have the right tools. In this video, Eric Stromer shows you how to tackle liquid and solid stains with household items like ammonia, water and baking soda. Using these trade secrets, your carpet will look as good as new.

Step 1: Soak Up Excess
Soak up the excess moisture with a light-colored cloth or paper towel. You may want to wear gloves.

Step 2: First Solution
Make a cleaning solution consisting of 1/2 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent and water. Dip your cloth into the solution and then blot the stain until nothing transfers to the cloth.

Step 3: Second Solution
Make a second solution consisting of two teaspoons of ammonia and a cup of warm water. Then blot the area with a clean cloth soaked in the solution.

Step 4: Cover
Cover the stain with some paper towels and a heavy object. Allow the paper towels to soak up the moisture from the carpet, periodically changing out the paper towel until all the moisture is gone.

Step 5: Solids
For solid pet accidents, use a knife or spoon to remove as much of it as possible. Then treat the stain using the same steps above.

Step 6: Tougher Stains
If everyday household products aren't enough for the job, you can buy foaming carpet-cleaning products with enzymes that are designed specifically for handling pet stains. For lingering odors, sprinkle some baking soda liberally over the area and let it sit overnight. Vacuum it up the next day.

After all the comments. NO AMMONIA, NO VINEGAR, We want to use "Natures Miracle", "Oxy Clean" etc. Well after the urine odor has been cleaned to your satisfaction wait until area is completely dry and sprinkle with baking soda, large box found in laundry department. I have a handicapped cat and from time to time he gets himself down on the floor and has to pee a little. I did not know this was happening until I started smelling "The Smell" The procedure we have used seems to have worked. ; ) My best to all you cat loving, peeing on the carpet, frustrated....Please....get rid of that smell....I want to have company. Even tho I don't know you we
share the same plight....Again, My best to all of you

He's cute & all but he doesn't have cats. If he did he wouldn't be using ammonia. That belongs in the litter box. Cat urine is ammonia based. Duh. One whiff of that mixture and the cat would be peeing all over it.

OMG. Seriously? This is horrible and I pray that people don't do this. First of all, pet urine is comprised of bacteria which cause the staining and the odor. Second of all, that odor has some of the same chemical compounds that are found in ammonia. Cats & Dogs both instinctively pee where they smell they have marked before. So, essentially if you are laying down ammonia in your carpet or on your flooring, and animals pee where they smell urine (or the same compounds - which are found in ammonia), you are basically reinforcing to your pet that this is where they should pee. This is even acknowledged by the humane society on their website. What are you thinking even telling people that this is ok???? It's NOT. And liquid detergent???? What is wrong with you. You need to use a cleaner that will kill the bacteria and germs that cause the stains and odors. You should be using Genesis 950 because it does just that. In doing so, by killing the bacteria, it deodorizes and in addition to removing the smell and stain, stops your pet from going there again. This article is chalk full of horrid advice that will only bring more frustration to pet owners. I am thoroughly disgusted.

PetSmart has a pet stain and odor remover in a white bottle with red lettering that is great with stai ad odor remover. My friend's house floored me when I walked in from the cat urine smells. ARGH! SO, I went to PetSmart, purchased the 2 1/2 gallon (or so) jug and voila! That stuff was a miracle! I couldn't smell the cat urine again! Thank goodness-- it was also my rental unit!

Yes, that stuff is great. I think its called Natures Miracle. Its about $30 for the gallon but way cheaper than replacing carpeting.

When removing pet urine (cat or dog) from carpeting. I have found the best way is in using a good carpet shampooer that sucks up the liquid throughly. Start with pouring water directly on the area and around it as it will spread, especially underneath the carpet into the padding. If the spot has dried before hand allow it to "wake up" the urine, and then vacuum up the water/urine area.
The next step would be using an Oxy-clean product and puring that solution on the same area as the watered area. Allowing this to set on the carpet for a good 15-20 minutes. You will begin to smell the urine, which means the product is working. After vacumming this portion , use either another round of plain water, or Pet Cleaning solution as you prefer. Read below about the futility of using any Amonia product which will make it worse.
I know this sounds like (and is) a long process, however it is the only one I have found to work completely. Thank you for alowing to add another stain removing idea.

White vinegar, then blot like crazy so it doesn't leave a spot.

Never use ammonia, it smells like the pee.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NEVER use vinegar or ammonia for pet stains. They both have the same chemical compounds as those found in urine. That scent could attract your animal to go in that spot again as they would relate the smell of vinegar or ammonia to their urine. Where do people hear this nonsense????
