How to Remove Pet Stains

Featured pro:
Category: Home Improvement

Pet accidents are inevitable, but they they can be a cinch to clean up, if you have the right tools. In this video, Eric Stromer shows you how to tackle liquid and solid stains with household items like ammonia, water and baking soda. Using these trade secrets, your carpet will look as good as new.

Step 1: Soak Up Excess
Soak up the excess moisture with a light-colored cloth or paper towel. You may want to wear gloves.

Step 2: First Solution
Make a cleaning solution consisting of 1/2 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent and water. Dip your cloth into the solution and then blot the stain until nothing transfers to the cloth.

Step 3: Second Solution
Make a second solution consisting of two teaspoons of ammonia and a cup of warm water. Then blot the area with a clean cloth soaked in the solution.

Step 4: Cover
Cover the stain with some paper towels and a heavy object. Allow the paper towels to soak up the moisture from the carpet, periodically changing out the paper towel until all the moisture is gone.

Step 5: Solids
For solid pet accidents, use a knife or spoon to remove as much of it as possible. Then treat the stain using the same steps above.

Step 6: Tougher Stains
If everyday household products aren't enough for the job, you can buy foaming carpet-cleaning products with enzymes that are designed specifically for handling pet stains. For lingering odors, sprinkle some baking soda liberally over the area and let it sit overnight. Vacuum it up the next day.

PetSmart has a pet stain and odor remover in a white bottle with red lettering that is great with stai ad odor remover. My friend's house floored me when I walked in from the cat urine smells. ARGH! SO, I went to PetSmart, purchased the 2 1/2 gallon (or so) jug and voila! That stuff was a miracle! I couldn't smell the cat urine again! Thank goodness-- it was also my rental unit!

When removing pet urine (cat or dog) from carpeting. I have found the best way is in using a good carpet shampooer that sucks up the liquid throughly. Start with pouring water directly on the area and around it as it will spread, especially underneath the carpet into the padding. If the spot has dried before hand allow it to "wake up" the urine, and then vacuum up the water/urine area.
The next step would be using an Oxy-clean product and puring that solution on the same area as the watered area. Allowing this to set on the carpet for a good 15-20 minutes. You will begin to smell the urine, which means the product is working. After vacumming this portion , use either another round of plain water, or Pet Cleaning solution as you prefer. Read below about the futility of using any Amonia product which will make it worse.
I know this sounds like (and is) a long process, however it is the only one I have found to work completely. Thank you for alowing to add another stain removing idea.

White vinegar, then blot like crazy so it doesn't leave a spot.

Never use ammonia, it smells like the pee.

Natural cleaning agents: We have a macaw parrot and we can not use any cleaning agents except natural stuff. So I have gotten very good at using stuff like vinager, lemons, vanilla, baking soda. Can anyone think of anything else?

Try tying a string tightly around the bird's neck and hang him from the chandelier for 3 days. Guaranteed not to make any future messes.

Blot up wet stain ASAP. Use dish detergent mixed with water (more water) with a brush, until foamy, blot up until dry. Stain may come back, repeat. Or then use a commercial dog stain remover. Same process for all stains.
