How to Remove Blood on Clothing

Featured pro:
Category: Home ImprovementStains Be Gone

Blood stains can be tricky. Once they've set they're almost impossible to get out, so they need to be treated right away. Here, Eric Stromer shows you three easy methods on how to tackle blood on clothing, depending on how stubborn the stain is. After your clothes have been treated, they can go right in the wash and should look just like new.

Step 1: Salt Method
Start working on the stain as soon as possible. Run it under cold water before sprinkling a little bit of salt on it. Rub together and rinse again before putting garment in the laundry.

Step 2: Soap Method
Another way to tackle a blood stain is with soap or shampoo. Apply a little bit to the affected area, work it into a lather and rinse.

Step 3: Ammonia Method
A third option is to use ammonia. It may smell awful, but it's a strong cleaning agent that's much safer to use on clothing than bleach. Scrub the stain with the product, rinse and then throw the garment in the laundry.

Step 4: Drying Tip
Make sure your stain is gone before putting your shirt into the dryer. The heat can set the stain if it's not treated properly.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • Salt
  • Soap or Shampoo
  • Ammonia

Using club soda on a fresh blood stain will also get it out. Just splash a little soda water on the blood stain and leave it for a minute then run under cold water and scrub lightly. The stain should be gone and you can wash it.

Hydrogen Peroxide - it breaks down the iron and proteins in the blood - even on a set stain - cleans it off of and out of most everything - oh..... and once the iron and proteins are broken down, will be negative for any blood or dna test.

Best and easiest way to remove blood stains, even if it has dried is hydrogen peroxide. Rinse the spot with cold water and pour on the hydrogen peroxide and lightly rub, comes out like a charm!

Eric love your shows but I am surprised to find you did not recommend vinegar to remove bloodstains. We have been using it in our family for more than 40 years and have never had it fail me in any way. It was a trick my mother taught me when I was a teenager. Keep up the good work I have learned so many tips from you.
