How to Hang a Porch Swing

Featured pro:
Category: Home Improvement

Eric Stromer and pal Carter Oosterhouse team up get your porch into full swing. Eric shows you his trade secrets for safely and securely hanging a porch swing using basic home improvement tools that you probably already have in your DIY toolbox.

And once you know how to hang the swing on your porch, head over to watch Carter tell you his trade secrets for choosing the perfect porch swing for your home's decor.

Step 1: Let it Swing
Give yourself at least 24 inches from a wall or any solid object when choosing your spot for your swing.

Step 2: Hang Strong
The most critical component of hanging a porch swing is the surface you hang into. At the very least you should screw into a 2 x 6 and above.

Step 3: Eyebolts
Eye bolts are recommended to be placed 2 inches out of the overall swing width on each side. Swing = 50 inches add 2 inches on left, add 2 inches on right; your eye bolts will be 54 inches apart.

Step 4: Pilot Hole
Using a screw gun and drill bit make pilot holes in your marked areas for your eye bolts, then run a screw driver horizontally through the eye bolt to twist into position.

Step 5: Chain, Chain, Chain
Run your chains down from the eye bolts down to the two "S" bolts from there the chains will split to run to the front and back of the bench giving it stability. Remove links in the chain to adjust for height or to make level.
