How to Get Rid of Mildew Stains

Featured pro:
Category: Home Improvement

Mildew stains can be hard to remove, but not if you attack them with one simple ingredient: hydrogen peroxide. The agent oxidizes just like bleach, but it's much safer. The fungus won't stand a chance against your new secret weapon, especially when mixed with a little water and some elbow grease.

Step 1: Mix the Solution
Mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with one gallon of hot water.

Step 2: Apply the Solution
Transfer the mixture into a spray bottle and apply it to your mildew-stained area. Let it stand for a few minutes before agitating with a brush. Apply some more and let it stand for 15 minutes. Rinse clean.

Step 3: Stubborn Stains
If your mildew stains are very stubborn, apply undiluted hydrogen peroxide straight onto your tile. Agitate it with a brush, let it stand and rinse clean.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Spray Bottle
  • Scrubbing Brush

Can't speak for the walls cuse I don't have a problem in my bath. however I have tile throughout my home and the areas that have a lot of foot traffic over the years got pretty black and no amount of scrubbing got htem clean until I came across Clorox Clean-up. I sprayed it on full strength and let it sit for about five minutes the first time. Then I used a stiff brush on the end of a long handle to lightly scrub the grout and mopped it up. To my surprize the grout looked new again. The grout by the way that I'm talking about is an off white. I rinsed the floor and buffed the tiles when they dried with a soft rag and then applied grout sealer again to all of the grout. On my kitchen conters it cleaned up the rust colored grout, got rid of oils that had soaked in around the stove area that I could not get to come out and after a rinse and it dried the counters tile grout looked new again. I was at the point that I was ready to remove all of the grout and re-grout. My tub shower by the way has white tile around it to he ceiling and I spray this grout once a week and use a scrub brush on it and flush with clear water and they look new all the time. I also apply carnuba car wax to the shower tiles after cleaning and it keep the soap film off the tlles. Just put it on by hand wait till it dries and buff with a clean soft cloth to a shine just like you do a car. Just be carefull with the Clorox Clean-up and don't spray any cloth including your clothing that you don't want to bleach out the color. But this stuff cuts grease without scrubbing.

I also have tan grout and for the 11 years I've owned this home, we can't seem to ever get the grout to look clean! There are stains in certain areas that are seriously BLACK stains that look like mildew but no cleaner or scrubbing ever takes it away! I keep my shower curtain pulled at all times but if anyone sees the walls in there I always feel the need to explain why they look so gross. It makes me look like I'm the scum wad who isn't cleaning! I've tried everything from bleach, Tilex, soft scrub with bleach, Kaboom, CLR, even TOILET BOWL CLEANER! (I was desperate at that point)! Ok, this is the last thing I'm trying. I've never used peroxide but I'm happy to try one last time to have a clean LOOKING shower. I know it's clean but it would be nice if it looked the part!

Westleys white wall cleaner for cars great stuff. If that doesnt work nothing will. Then you need to get a grout saw. It's a hand tool cheap to buy at any hardware store. Just remove a little grout and regrout it.

OK here is one...I started using hydrogen peroxide when I wash my hands after playing with my trucks and cars.It all started when I had grease and oil on my hands and couldn't get it off.It dawned on me hydrogen peroxide is a natural substance..oil, grease rotted old plants.. tried it , it worked .. use some go jo.. spray (spray bottle) some H/P on, rub off..

Will this work on colored grout? I have tan grout and it has become darker in several areas. I believe this is mildew or mold that has discolored it. I have used various cleaners and nothing gets rid of the darker areas.
