How to Maintain a Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposal jams are never fun, but fixing them doesn't have to involve a plumber -- really! Learn how to fix them yourself with these trade secrets from Eric Stromer.

Step 1: In A Jam
Garbage disposal jams are never fun, but fixing them doesn't have to involve a plumber. Learn how to fix them yourself. First, cut off the power to the disposal.

Step 2: Turn Around
Reach under the disposal, and insert an allen wrench into the center of the bottom of the unit. Turn the wrench back and forth until it moves freely in a full rotation.

Step 3: In the Clear
With the power off, you can check to see what can be causing the jam. Then restore the power, turn on the water and check the disposal. If it’s still jammed, repeat the steps.

Step 4: Get Loose
Or you can shove the handle of a broom inside the disposal to loosen up whatever is jammed.

Step 5: Get Fruity
Throw cut-up lemons or oranges with ice down the disposal to keep it clean, fresh and sharp. Run the disposal with cold water only.

Step 6: Just Say No
Never pour bleach, drain cleaners or chemicals down the disposal—they’ll harm your unit and they’re terrible for the environment.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • allen wrench
  • broom
  • lemons or oranges

Great hints for clearing disposal jams. Should also advise NOT to put hands inside unit. Also, on demonstration model, please get an electrician to fix the wiring connector to the disposer. Not a very good reference to use when we can all see exposed wiring. Shame on you!!!!! R.E.W.

Hey Strommer, at 20 seconds into this video, you can see the conduit has separated from the disposal. The only thing holding it are the hot 12G copper wires. Isn't a major house fire or accidental electrocution a bigger problem than my disposal not being able to spin the remnants of my dinner?
