How to Fix a Stuck Drawer

Featured pro:
Category: Home Improvement

There are a number of things that can cause a stuck drawer. Eric Stromer has trade secrets for all of them.

Step 1: Jiffy Lube
There are a number of issues that can cause a stuck drawer, but there’s a secret for opening all of them. If it’s a plastic or metal runner that’s stuck, just spray on some lubricant or replace the runners.

Step 2: Stick Up
To fix a sticking wood drawer, first pull out the drawer and check to see if anything has fallen into the drawer guides and gotten stuck.

Step 3: Hammer it Home
Then hammer in anything that’s loose or sticking out and sand the runners to smooth them over.

Step 4: Wax On, Wax Off
Then smear paraffin or liquid beeswax over the runners with your finger, or smooth nylon tape on them, then use a utility knife to trim the tape.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • spray lubricant
  • hammer
  • paraffin or beeswax
  • nylon tape
  • utility knife

Consider using the old fashioned 3 in 1 oil instead of WD40 which is a moisture remover and does dry sticky over a long time...and for those who use WD in door mecanisms...be sure to periodically refresh so they don't get sticky...

Bees wax will dry and get sticky over time..WD too, stick to a used bar of soap... Also great for coating screws...allows you to drive them in without binding and splintering the wood.

Just run a bar of soap on the runners or, perhaps, some WD40.

I have an old very nice wooden dresser. Two drawers open about an inch or two and will not budge from there. The drawers are empty. There is no access from drawers above or below. Any suggestions on how to remove them without damaging the furniture?

Eric: I love your tricks for making things work better - I used some soap on a sticky drawer but have to admit that your method of the bees wax was much better and now, no drawers in my house are stuck.....they all glide in and out.......
Keep giving us your secrets - it makes our lives a whole lot easier.......thanks,

I've successfully used a bar of hand soap to lubricate sticking drawers, many times, over many years. It's usually around the house, it works, and if you ever want to refinish the piece of furniture, you can wash it out with hot water. Paraffin, wax, and tape adhesives are difficult to get out of the wood grain if you refinish.

This is why the world will never change. Every generation has to re-learn the basics of life. You can fix just about anything in the house with vinegar, soap, bee's wax or W-D 40. These "trade secrets" are older than Hugh Hefner!
Just buy a copy of "Ask Heloise" and you'll find all the old-timey remedies for household hassles. Otherwise, just go around once a year (spring is good) and tighten all the nuts, bolts, screws and fixtures in your house. No one does that anymore but that's how you keep the place from falling apart. Smear some soap or wax on squeaky things and use vinegar to clean major crud. Teach your kids to do this and we can skip the next generation's "trade secrets."

Does anyone know how to correct a warped cabinet door? We recently purchased a home near the water. The kitchen cabinet is located near a window that must have been left open all summer allowing the mist and rain and humidity to come in. I was wondering if anyone knew how we can get it back to being somewhat flat again. There are actually several in that condition.

If it were my problem I would find a very level surface like an old door and lay it on a couple saw horses...then take a cabinet door and soak it with a hose...then lay another heavy flat item on top of it while it dries. The water has to soak into the wood so if it is well painted it might not work as well... I actually use clamps on 2x4's across the cabinet door... Give it a shot!
