How to Clean Gas Burners

Featured pro:
Category: Home Improvement

Your gas stove will work best when you've got clean burners. Eric Stromer shows you how to unclog them.

Step 1
For your gas stove to work its best, you need to make sure there's no build-up on the burners. For starters, turn off the stove's gas line.

Step 2
Then, disconnect the stove's power.

Step 3
Remove the stove's grates and clean the stovetop surface.

Step 4
Lift up the cook top. Prop it open with the inside brace or remove the top altogether.

Step 5
Remove the cap and burner.

Step 6
Wash each of the burner pieces with a scrub brush in warm, soapy water. Let them dry upside down. They will need to completely dry before they are reassembled.

Step 7
Clear the burner openings by poking in a needle or straight pin to clear out any debris.

Step 8
Clean the flash tube opening.

Step 9
Clear the pilot light opening with the needle or pin. Be careful to not enlarge the opening.

Step 10
Reassemble the burner unit once it is completely dry.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • pin or needle
  • scrub brush

I caught Atlas Tannery maintenance of Pierce Properties Milwaukee being quite lax in this. They keep the gas valve on, clean the stove, drop the tray, blows out the pilot light, lock the vacant room, which then slowly leaks gas into the hallway. I notice the gas smell leak and complain. Thomas B Powers of Pierce Properties gets really mad about any complaint, like roof flooding into rooms, sump pump backup, plumbing leaks, etc. This slum landlord does not want to spend any money on anything. Perhaps he has vandals like this working for him. Pierce Properties also uses name Loon (Saloon?) Investments. 720 W Virginia St 53204, 2538 W National Ave 53204.

FOR TAR OR ROOF CEMENT USE WD-40 TO CLEANUP, CLEAN HANDS AND MATERIALS AND TOOLS. DOES NOT HAVE RESIDUAL ODOR OF KEROSENE. NOR THE KERO MESS. ALSO, USE FULL STRENGTH BLEACH IN A PUMP SPRAYER DIRECTLY ON POISON IVY. WATCH IT REACT IMMEDIATELY. NEXT DAY IT WILL BE SHRIVELED DEAD. GOOD FOR 2 MONTHS OR SO. ALSO SPONGE BATHE USING BLEACH IF YOU TOUCHED POISON IVY. BLEACH IS PRETTY DARN SAFE TO USE. ALSO USE BLEACH ON DECK TO KILL ANY SURFACE GROWTH OR SLIPPERY MILDEW ETC. RINSE OFF LATER. AND........DO YOU HAVE A REMEDY TO ERADICATE INVASIVE BAMBOO? HATE IT HATE IT SOOO BAD!!

For those of you who have electric starters maybe you need to watch the video over again,,UNPLUG the darn thing and you can clean it effectivly,, or tell your maids or housekeepers to do so,,not all of us have the ULTRAMODERN models so this info IS useful IF YOU WATCH the video CAREFULLY.

Who trusts this guy? And, why can't they have the procedure in writing as well as on video? I like to read it step by step also.

Hello Jude

My stove is inset between granite countertops. I don't know where the gas is, so I guess I would need a pro for this one.
