Upholstery Secrets

Category: Home Decor

Learn how to add some custom flair to boring wooden furniture with this trade secret from Kelly Edwards.

Step 1: Sharp Shooter
Learn how to add some custom flair to boring wooden furniture. The first rule is to use a high-quality air compressor staple gun instead of a regular hand staple gun.

Step 2: Ripple Effect
If covering a bar stool, cut a piece of vinyl fabric a bit larger than the seat, then staple the four corners first. Pinch the fabric and pull it back before you staple to make sure you don’t have any ripples or ridges. Then staple all the way around the seat and trim the excess edges.

Step 3: Sofa So Good
Cover a couch cushion with three pieces of fabric: top, bottom and the piece that goes around the sides. Lie the fabric down so the pattern side is facing the cushion. Take the outside piece and wrap it all the way around. Then pinch the pieces together and pin them with sewing pins.

Step 4: Stitch in Time
Slip the cushion out, turn the pinned fabric piece inside out, then sew it together.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • high-quality air compressor staple gun
  • vinyl or other sturdy fabric
  • wooden bar stool
  • fabric
  • sewing pins
  • needle and thread

this is NOT an easy job...been there/done that. This video doesn't show how to put in the zipper which is a horrible thing to try or do. I've taken reupholstery classes from the best and I've done 2 oversize arm chairs. One of the hardest things I've ever done...lots of sewing on the machine and lots of stapeling....it's NOT EASY! and this video doesn't show the hard work involved.

Professional or Novice... ALWAYS wear SAFETY GLASSES when using a pnuematic gun. I hear that it is waaaaaaaaaaaay easier to replace a stool cover than an eye!

Well Remember this is a Do It Yourself and not Professionally done. It will do for a change someone cannot afford for others to do for them, like yourselves..

I will have to admit, they make things look so easy. Watched one for a back wall behind your stove, putting up tiles its easy if you know how..

The stool was okay but the trim job with a pair of scissors NO! and the cushion cover was Really Bad! I don't know why you would ever show people this. I upholster and sew for my job and I would never teach someone to do this. Never!

How many times do we have to see a boring presentation on how to reupholster furniture? Do we have any original ideas or must we continue to see the same old presentations?
