How to Make a Planter

Featured pro:
Category: Home Decor

Why spend money on boring store-bought planters when you can make one of your own out of unusual items you already have around the house?

Step 1: Down the Drain
You can basically turn anything into a planter, such as an old toolbox, watering can or lunch box. First make sure your planter has drainage holes. Just drill holes in the bottom for any excess water to escape.

Step 2: Six Inches Under
Then place your plants inside the object with enough potting soil to cover the roots.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • Flea market or thrift store finds, such as a toolbox, lunch box or watering can
  • drill
  • plants
  • potting soil
  • small shovel

Cute ideas. I love using unusual containers as planters and it looks like you scored big at a yard sale with your finds! One of my favorite planters is a white tea cup with the word Sereni-tea in green written across it. It sits next to a Barbie-sized ceramic bath-tub on my back patio. I "planted" a Barbie doll in the dirt with her arms, head and feet sticking out of the soil and added a small-leafed "Steppable" that spread and covered the dirt. It looks like Barbie is having a bubble bath with leafy-bubbles!
