How to Paint Ceramic Dishes

Featured pro:
Category: Home Decor

If your plain old dinnerware is feeling blah and boring, you don't have to shell out for a brand-new set to refresh your tablescape. Carter Oosterhouse shows you his trade secrets for bringing new life to old dinnerware with non-toxic paint and some simple techniques. Whether it's a platter painted with an abstract motif, a pitcher graced with branches and leaves or a bold, red-rimmed teacup, you can do it yourself with Carter's easy-to-follow tips.

Step 1: Paint Your Platter
Dinnerware tends to be either glass, porcelain or ceramic; non-porous materials such as these require special nontoxic water-based paint that will set at a specific temperature. Most art supply stores carry at least some kind of ceramic paint.

Step 2: Freehand
If you can, simply paint onto your piece whatever design you want.

Step 2: Dip Cup
If you have plain old white coffee cups try sitting the rims into a saucer of paint, it will add style and flair at very little cost.

Step 3: Tape it Off
On larger items, like a serving platter, use blue painter's tape to mark out a design then paint. After drying slowly remove the tape to reveal your brand new centerpiece dish.

Items You'll Need for this GMC Trade Secret

  • Ceramic Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Blue Painter's Tape
