Featured pro:
Category: Home DecorLight Up Your Life

Kristan Cunningham has a clever trade secret for creating candle luminaries made from wax ... and balloons! Learn how you can use a few simple items to add this beautiful, glowing accent to your home.

Step 1: Warm Balloons
In a pot of warm water and place several large party balloons (thicker than water balloons) that are filled with warm water.

Step 2: Wax Works
In a double boiler melt enough paraffin wax to coat half of each balloon at least eight times. Temperature of wax should be around 160º - 170º.

Step 3: Wax Job
Pick up a balloon and dip it halfway into the melted wax, hold for a moment, then lift out and hold for a few seconds so the wax settles, then dip it in again. Repeat 4 to 5 times.

Step 4: Wax On
After dip coating several layers, place balloon on a sheet of wax paper balloon. When placing ballon down be sure and press and hold in place for a moment this is created a base for your luminaries. Let these cool down then repeat dipping process.

Step 5: Pop
Using a safety pin, pop the ballon and dump out the water and the balloon. You will notice rough unfinished edges around the top, lightly press the top down on a hot cooking sheet.

Step 6: Let There be Tea Light
You can add color to the wax using colored wax chips that you can get from the art store. Add your tea lights, light them up and bask in the glow of your creativity!

Hey back to the candle with the milk carton - you have to carve out some of the wax in the middle /top to set the tea light in . Do this when it's still warm and easy to cut or just use the wick and have a beautiful candle with a wick.

Hi, thanks for the great idea! When the kids were younger we made candles by pouring melted parafin into a large rinsed out milk carton. When finished pouring the parafin you put in the wicks and leave about 1" of wick wrapped around a pencil and then lay the pencil across the top of the milk carton leaving the wick hanging down in the wax and wait for the wax to cool and harden. Remove from carton by tearing away the sides and your candle will look lacy with some holes here and there for the light to shine through or as you did and put a tea light down in them. Very pretty! !
