How to Dress Up Your Mailbox

Featured pro:
Category: Home DecorUpgrade Your Exterior

Your mailbox can be a great accessory to your home, which is why Carter Oosterhouse is showing you his trade secrets on how to dress it up to add instant curb appeal. Watch as he transforms a standard mailbox into three eye-catching looks that are not only beautiful, but functional, too.

Step 1: Where Your Heart on Your Box
Whether attached to your house or at the end of your driveway your mailbox is like a piece of accent jewelry revealing a lot about who you are.

Step 2: New Mail Box
Go to your hardware store and buy a new mailbox. We can make it look anyway we want but we want to start with a new one, after all the main purpose is to keep the mail dry and secure.

Step 3: The Woody
Take some re-salvaged lumber slats and cut them down to the mailbox length and using an adhesive affix the slats to your mailbox. Spray paint the mailbox door brown or a complimenting color then scuff the door giving it a “distressed” look.

Step 4: Old Glory
Paint your mailbox off-white or cream color, let dry, next tape off your stripes using blue painter’s tape. Remember to leave off a square at the back for your star-- fifty stars would take too long so use one but accent the outline with rivets. Drill pilot holes for you rivets when that done tape off the star area and spray paint your red stripes. When your stripes have dried spray paint your star area blue then insert rivets.

Step 5: Nautical
Paint your mailbox a nice deep blue and add some nautical touches like rope knots, sea shells etc.; you might want to add your house number -- the post office recommends using numbers that are at least an inch tall.

I love my mailbox that I made. It's a big black and white cat with long whiskers. So cute.

According to the post office:
3.2.2 Custom-Built Mailbox
The local postmaster may approve a curbside mailbox constructed by a customer who, for aesthetic or other reasons, does not want to use an approved manufactured box. The custom-built box must generally meet the same standards as approved manufactured boxes for flag, size, strength, and quality of construction.

Easy to do, good ideas presented nicely. My neighborhood dresses up mailboxes. I'd like to be able to print directions if I needed them.

You've already become obsolete. You'll wither away none too quickly.
