How to Distress Furniture

Featured pro:
Category: Home Decor

Finding a piece of vintage furniture with the perfect amount of wear marks can be difficult, not to mention expensive. To get that rustic look, Carter Oosterhouse uses a wire brush, a chain, some nails and a sander to get the perfect level of distress. Here's how to create decades of wear and tear in just a few easy steps.

Step 1: Wire Brush
Using a wire brush, remove any excess paint. Be sure and concentrate on handles, corners and other elements of the furniture that you imagine would receive the most wear and tear over time.

Step 2: The Chain
The chain will add a random effect of the bumping and bruising that furniture is exposed to over time.

Step 3: Nails and Screws
Wrap some nails and screws into a wash cloth, and then slowly go around the furniture, tapping the cloth with a hammer. This will add divots and chips to the furniture, building the distressed look.

Step 4: The Sander
Using a power sander, go gently over the entire piece until it meets your liking. Try varying the grit of the sand paper. Be sure to wear a mask, and be conscious of the fact that some furniture may have been painted with lead paint.
