what's wrong with holes in the wall? It's easy enough to spackle them when needed.

Instead of drilling one whole, you glue a thick ugly strap of velcro which damages the paint and option two is have some ugly thick piece of wood that could topple over and damage not one but several pieces of art simultaniously.
