Hanging Heavy Objects Safely

Do you know the trade secret to hanging heavy items safely on the wall? Kelly Edwards does, and she's here to share hers with you.

Step 1
When you want to hang something heavy on the wall, it may be tempting to just put some screws into the wall and go for it. You should not do this though, because drywall is weak, and the screws can easily rip out. Use a stud-finder to find studs on the wall, and screw directly into the studs.

Step 2
Wall anchors are a good alternative if you can't find studs. Pre-drill a hole into the wall, and insert the wall anchor. Lightly tap it with a hammer until the anchor sits flush with the wall.

Step 3
Use a level to ensure it is hanging straight.

Step 1: Heavy Duty
Hang heavy frames safely and securely every time. Always make sure you use wall anchors. First pre-drill a hole, then slip the anchor into the hole in the wall.

Step 2: Hammer Time
Lightly hammer the anchor into the wall, so it’s just flush with the wall.

Step 3: Anchor Away
Drill a screw into the anchor, leaving a bit of thread showing to hang your picture.

Step 4: What a Stud
Or use a stud finder to find where the studs are in your wall—then you don’t need to use anchors.

If you want to hang heavy items on the wall, but you don’t want to drill holes, there are a couple of solutions. First, you can use industrial-strength adhesive to mount your pictures on the wall.

Step 2: Long Board
Or if you have several objects, get a long board and give it a few coats of fresh paint.

Step 3: Give Some Props
Add a couple screws to the board, then prop it against the wall, and hang the artwork on the screws.
