Stair Landing Decorations

Featured pro:
Category: Home Decor

Carter Oosterhouse shows you how to enhance the design of your home by adding decorations to your stair landing. Learn how to increase visual appeal with a runner; anchor the space with a shelving system; balance the area with lamps and sconces; and complete the space with accessories. With just a little bit of decorating, you can add a lot of visual impact.

Step 1: Start With the Floor
Choose a runner that's size appropriate and has a no-skid bottom for added safety.

Step 2: Pick a Shelving Unit
Anchor your space with a shelving system. Take into account its functionality and size -- you want it to be narrow enough for people to able to walk by.

Step 3: Add Balance
Balance the space by adding height to the mix. Choose a floor lamp or tall plant to accent the corners or unused areas.

Step 4: Use Sconces
If your space allows, add visual interest with sconces. They can flank a window or simply complement each other for a fresh look.

Step 5: Highlight Awkward Elements
Don't ignore awkward architectural elements; highlight them. For instance, if you have window that's too high in the space, accent it with sheers.

Step 6: Accessorize
Fill out your space with vases, sculptures, books, etc. for a warmer feel. Let the landing reflect your style!

LOVE THESE TIPS. I WAS WONDERING WHAT KIND OF PLANTS WOULD YOU PUT ON A PORCH THAT DOESN'T GET MUCH DIRECT LIGHT?

A little too much - just not digging the final look of the area. I agree with Julie as far as the white curtains being too short and too much of a contrast with the white. Longer neutral drapes would be a better fit. The narrow, small space may be more effective for art on the walls, drapery and perhaps the sconces if spaced wider, or a retro hanging lamp in the one corner.

Hello Julie!

I would have used floor to ceiling drapes in earth tones to match the tones in furniture and runner. the white drapes are awful! And perhaps a rectangular painting uner the window area instead of the sea urchin things. The sconzes could have been larger and the plant would have looked better if it draped~ perhaps a pedastil for it to sit on.
