How to Use a Pastry Bag

Featured pro:
Category: Cooking

Curtis Stone demonstrates the basics of working with a pastry bag. With just a few easy tips, he explains how to fill the bag and use it with confidence. Whether you're using it to create fancy decorations or just as a handy kitchen tool, Curtis has you covered.

Step 1: Control
Once you’ve chosen the type of pastry bag you want to use, hold the bag and fold the top over halfway to make a cuff around your hand. Cut about ½-inch off the bottom of the bag and, slip in the pastry tip inside the bag. It should be very snug in the bag and only the tip should be sticking out.

Step 2: Filling the Filling
Scoop filling into bag and fill up halfway. Shake filling to bottom of bag by holding the top.

Step 3: Twist Off
Once your filling is in the bag, squeeze the back of the bag so the filling just begins to come out the tip, and then twist the back of the bag.

I've also used a freezer bag with a snipped-off end. Much neater and easier. This works great for deviled eggs, too.

Those pie crusts aren't "homemade" and the filling probably is not either...

Instead of spending you money on a pastry bag...use a freezer bag. Snip one end to the desired size and "voila".....and if you feel you must spend money...just purchase the cone...
