Fresh vs. Canned Foods

Category: Cooking

Curtis Stone shares his trade secrets for choosing fresh, in-season produce when it's available, and how some canned vegetables and fruits can be a smart choice any time of year.

Step 1: Fresh vs. Canned
When possible always try and by fresh fruit in season, although there are a few instances where a canned item makes sense.

Step 2: Fresh Fall
In the fall you want to focus on your apples and pears because chances are they were grown locally so they will be nice and fresh and they'll be cheaper.

Step 3: Fresh Summer
This is when your stone (pit) fruits and berries are in season so that is when to buy-- again they will be fresher.

Step 4: Canned
There are times when canned makes sense particularly with certain items like beans, artichokes and things with a longer shelf life.
